Worthing Borough Council are extending the cheap parking trial in the town centre multi-storey car parks for another three months.
The three month reduction from £1.70 to £1.00 an hour ran from April 1st to June 30th and applied to the High Street, Grafton and Buckingham multi-storey car parks.
Leader of the Council Paul Yallop challenged Worthing residents to ‘use it or lose it’ and initial indications show a positive response. Worthing Borough Council says some weeks have seen a 35% increase in use – usually when the schools are on holiday. The last week of the trial saw a 26% increase in use and 7% increase in revenue.
Cllr Yallop said at last night’s Joint Overview & Scrutiny Committee the indications are good but it is early days. The Leader was cautious following the recently late declared budget overspend on theatres of £484,000 which took the Cabinet by surprise.
Worthing Borough Council also advises reserves set aside against possible failure of the trial have not been used as yet.
