A lack of wasps during the summer is partly to blame for Adur & Worthing’s pest control department not meeting budget. Pest control income for 2012-13 is down by £15,000 for Worthing and £10,000 for Adur.
The 2012-13 budget update report to tonight’s Joint Strategic Committee states reduced income due to a drop in certain pest species (e.g. wasps) in the summer, plus the income from the charging regime is less than anticipated.
Pest control charges increased from 2011-12 with rats in domestic premises changed from being free to £30.00. The wasps charge is £50.00 – raised from £44.00 last year. There is a reduced charge for those in receipt of Income Support, Council Tax Benefit or Housing benefit.
The low temperatures, downpours and high winds last summer meant fewer insects than normal were available for wasps to feed their broods.
