Andy Lutwyche on Worthing Cricket Club – 1st XI

Our cricket correspondent Andy Lutwyche Comments on Worthing Cricket Club:

1st XI v Preston Nomads (Away):

Once again the fixture conjured up a tricky start for Worthing at the reigning league champions, Preston Nomads. Darryl Rebbetts won the toss and elected to bowl for Nomads to rack up 238 for 9 from their 53 overs in a shortened game due to some lunch time rain In tghe wickets was Sussex batsman Matt Machan, making his league debut for the club, who took 3 for 45, John Glover took 2 for 45, with Benn Challen, Luke Vinter and overseas all-rounder Malcolm Lake all taking a wick a-piece.

Worthing were cruising in reply at 224 for 1 with Michael Gould (67), another debutant Matt Green (66) and Machan (84) inflicting the damage, but a collapse left Ian Gooding facing his first ball, which was the last ball of the game requiring 4 runs with every fielder on the boundary. The wicketkeeper somehow found a gap much to the delight of the team who stormed the pitch as Gooding aeroplaned around the outfield!

Historic win!
