Thomasville, Alabama has a population of just 4,209 (2010) – smaller than Worthing’s smallest ward Northbrook which has 4,973 souls (2013). Yet Thomasville has its own Mayor – Sheldon Day who bats for investment from across the world.
Last year he attracted Chinese investment by bringing the Golden Dragon Precise Copper Tube Group plant to neighbouring Wilcox County creating hundreds of jobs. It is one of 7 projects promising some $300 million of investment to the greater Thomasville area over a three year period.
Not satisfied Mayor Day was spotted in October by The Economist drumming up more business in Dalian, a city in north China. The Economist reports in 2013 an average of one US Mayor visited China every 10 days to do the same – every 3 days in October.
Worthing Borough Council’s new Chief Executive Alex Bailey laid out his vision for rejuvenating Worthing last week in ‘Catching the Wave’ and we are pleased attracting inward investment is number one of his top priorities.
We already have world class businesses in Worthing with EDF,GSK, ETI, B&W Speakers and Southern Water but Worthing Daily is greedy for more. That’s why we support Mr Bailey wholeheartedly in his efforts for 2014 and beyond.
Let’s make 2014 the year to bat for Worthing. Teville Gate is promised to be done this year – let’s do whatever it takes to get the investment to ensure it is completed.
And to do the business Worthing Daily will forgive Mr Bailey the odd trip abroad or two.
