A delighted Sharon Clarke of Worthing Town Centre Initiative said today the weekend’s Worthing Birdman contest was the best yet and is really truly international.
Record distances were flown on both days by Ron Freeman from Newbiggin-on-Sea, Northumberland with 106 metres on Saturday and a stunning 141.5 metres on Sunday. Unfortunately Ron was unable to claim the prize for breaking the 100 metres mark as he flew sidewards and not straight.
Film and television crews were there not only from the UK but as from far away as the United States and Australia. Actor Warwick Davis famous for his title role in Willow and roles in Star Wars and Harry Potter was there filming for a new holidaying in Britain TV programme going out next year.
Sharon Clarke said: “Long may it stay in Worthing. Great publicity!”
The fun flyers for charity this year were on both days including Dastardly and Muttley (aka Mark and Nick Roberts – sons of Mayoress Norah Fisher) for Canine Partners and Laura Scott for the Chestnut Tree House.
Atlantic Splash members Neal Marsh in a mini version of their boat “Missie”, Bastien Leclair as a shark and Tom Hyland as a flying fish jumped on both days.
Worthing Daily sponsors Atlantic Splash in their attempt to be the first crew from Worthing to row across the Atlantic Ocean in December.
Worthing International Birdman 2013 took place on Saturday August 10th and Sunday August 11th. Next year the contest takes place on Saturday July 12th and Sunday July 13th 2014.
Worthing Town Centre Initiative organises the contests.
