Worthing Daily recently asked all General Election candidates in the Worthing constituencies to state their case why you should vote for them on May 7th.
Here is what Bob Smytherman who is standing for the Liberal Democrats in East Worthing & Shoreham has to say:
“Following a last minute change by our prospective candidate I decided it was time I put myself forward as a potential MP for the area I was born, grew up and educated.
“Having been election agent for the Liberal Democrats for the last few General Elections I thought it was time I stood myself following the success of our party in Coalition putting aside party differences for the sake of the country to deliver a strong, stable Government anchored in the centred-ground delivering fairness for the residents of East Worthing and Shoreham constituency. I believe I have the right qualities to be the next MP.
“I have been a Local Borough Councillor for the Liberal Democrats in Worthing since 2002 and West Sussex County Councillor for the Tarring Division which includes part of the East Worthing constituency since 2009.
“I grew up in the constituency of East Worthing and Shoreham having been born in Lancing and attended Boundstone nursery before attending St Mary’s Catholic Primary school in Worthing and later returning to Lancing to attend Irene Avenue middle school for a year before moving up to Boundstone Comprehensive school in the 1980’s.
“I moved to Worthing in the 1990’s where I still live today.
“Despite leaving school with little in the way of academic qualifications I spent most of my working life at Old Nick’s burger Bar in Worthing after leaving college, before starting my own business in 2000 running a Coffee Shop concession in Courts furniture store in Shoreham.
“Other jobs include being a Cycling Instructor for West Sussex County Council teaching children from local schools before being elected to the County Council in 2009.
“Outside of Politics I am currently Governor of Alternative Provision College and a Trustee of Mental Health charity Coastal West Sussex Mind and a member of local charity Guild Care.
“I am also Chairman of the residents association where I live which is responsible for the day to day management of the block of flats as well as being Chairman of the Federation of Private Residents Associations which advise similar groups on leasehold property matters.
“In addition I was the 97th Mayor of the Borough of Worthing for 2013/14 and became known as the #coolmayor for my use of social media catapulting the mayoral role into the 21st Century and to a new younger demographic.
“As Mayor I carried out a record number of civic duties and became known as the People’s Mayor with my friendly approachable manner.
“In 2014 I was asked to take part in the Community Play and was given the role of the Town Crier; a role I offered to continue for the Town.
“I now look forward to the next challenge of representing the area at Westminster and being part of the next Coalition Government delivering a strong economy but doing so fairly and supporting those on lower and middle incomes while those with the ‘broadest shoulders’ should pay their fair share in taxes.”
