Broadwater resident guilty of benefit fraud

Mrs Fiona Hall aged 57 of Kingsland Road, Broadwater pleaded guilty at Worthing Magistrates Court on Monday (February 25th) to benefit fraud.  She failed to notify a change in her circumstances to obtain Housing and Council Tax Benefit.

Mrs Hall claimed benefit in 2008 based on her part time earnings and did inform Worthing Borough Council throughout her claim of some changes.  However between April 2011 and September 2012 she failed to confirm that her earnings from Morrison supermarket had increased. The change was discovered in a routine data matching exercise.

As a result Mrs Hall was overpaid £3016.49 Housing Benefit and £693.29 Council Tax Benefit, making a total of £3,709.78 benefits received to which she was not entitled.

Mrs Hall was given a conditional discharge for 12 months.

She was also ordered to pay £200 towards the prosecution costs incurred by Worthing Borough Council.

Mrs Hall is currently making monthly payments towards her overpayment.
