Calling young artists to design new logo for child safeguarding

Young artists can show off their talents in a design competition for a new logo for the West Sussex Local Safeguarding Children Board.  The artists can win prizes for themselves and their schools.

Safeguarding  helps keep children safe and sometimes provides protection or help to the families of these children. The Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) makes sure everyone involved in safeguarding does their best to look after these children and their families.

The current design needs refreshing so the board decided to run the competition for children aged 11 to 14. The winning design should reflect some or all of these concepts: caring, safety, support, children and families, warmth and friendliness.

Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children – Start of Life, said: “We want to involve the child’s voice in the whole safeguarding process more and raise the profile of children’s safeguarding generally. We know there are a lot of talented artists in our schools and hope that by working together through this competition we can do this.”

The competition was the idea of John Thompson, who is a lay member of the Safeguarding Children Board and is also Chairman of Governors at Chesswood Middle School and Vice Chairman of Governors at Davison Girls High School both in Worthing.  This followed a suggestion from Dr Jo Crane, the LSCB designated doctor, that the current logo was downbeat.

Mr Thompson said: “The LSCB is about children, so it seemed sensible for them to design a logo that they liked and would present a positive image to children”.

Entries should be able to be reduced to about 3cm square, while submissions can be any size up to a maximum of 25cm square with one, two or four colours. Artwork can be hand-drawn, painted, or designed on computers. Entrants can decide whether or not to incorporate into the design the letters LSCB, SC (Safeguarding Children) or WSSCB.

The logos of other Local Safeguarding Boards can be found on Bing, though should not be copied too closely.

The closing date for entries is July 1st 2013.  All entries should be accompanied by a note containing the entrant’s name, address, age and name of school.  Designs should be sent to Sheila Holman, Safeguarding Unit, Bognor Medical Centre, West Street, Bognor Regis, PO21 1UT.
