Firefighters found an elderly woman dead attending a bungalow fire in Worthing early this morning.
A neighbour raised the alarm at 2.39 am calling West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service to the detached bungalow on Limetree Avenue.
Two fire engines from Worthing were at the scene within minutes and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus began a search of the property. One female casualty, believed the sole occupier, was found inside but unfortunately the lady was already deceased.
A third fire engine from Worthing and a crew from Lancing helped to extinguish the fire, which has caused severe damage to the bungalow.
Fire Investigation Officers are currently at the scene working alongside the Police to establish the cause of the fire. At this early stage the death is being treated as unexplained.
