An Osfted inspector visiting Thomas A Becket Middle School on March 20th specifically on English found all aspects of the subject outstanding. The comments made in a letter to Mr John Gadd, the headmaster, are published on the Ofsted website.
The overall effectiveness of English is outstanding. Achievement, teaching, the curriculum, leadership and management of English are all outstanding.
Pupils’ levels of attainment in reading and writing on entry in Year 4 are largely average or below. After a dip in 2011, results in Year 6 national tests rose again in 2012. Achievement over time is significantly higher than average, which represents excellent progress. Pupils do not lose momentum after Year 6 and respond purposefully to the challenges in Year 7.
Areas for improvements discussed include ensuring pupils’ progress in literacy and English is not disrupted by the move from Year 7 at the middle school to Year 8 at high school.
The inspection was part of the Ofsted 2012-13 subject survey inspection programme: English.
