The first person charged with drug driving during Sussex Police’s Christmas crackdown was stopped in Goring Road, Worthing at 1.55 am on Saturday (December 7th).
41-year-old Gavin Waterer, of Southcourt Close, West Preston was arrested and charged with drug-driving. Mr Waterer was released on bail to appear at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on January 28th.
Police officers are testing for illegal substances for the first time in Sussex this month. They use drug testing equipment at stations to check if arrested motorists have taken illegal substances and then got behind the wheel.
Inspector Carl Knapp said: “Drug-driving can be just as dangerous as drink-driving. People who take drugs and get behind the wheel put not only themselves but other road users at risk.
“If you know someone is driving after taking drugs text us on 65999 or call 999 with the driver and the vehicle’s details so we can stop them before they hurt someone.
“By working together we can help make Sussex’s roads safer for everyone this Christmas.”
