A freak storm just before 8.00 pm last night (Thursday March 27th) woke up Worthing with a bang. Worthing Urban Gardener Colm Sweet reported on Facebook how he was narrowly missed by a lightning strike.
Colm said: “Walking home the air directly in front of me and around me ignited into bright blue, my ears popped, there was a shock wave, a huge bang, all the car alarms went off and a strong smell of burning. I think the single lightning strike missed me by at most 2 metres. Not sure how or why but I’m still here. Glass of red wine required!
“I think it hit a parking sign next to me and maybe the paint or the sign scorched and that was the burning I could smell immediately afterwards.”
Many others across Worthing’s social media expressed their shock at the sudden and loud storm commenting how they had never heard or seen anything as bad before.
Worthing firefighters attended properties affected by lightning strikes in east Worthing within minutes of each other. In Church Walk a lightning strike in the local area caused an electrical surge in power supplies with many houses needing checking by the fire officers. Power was isolated to one house and one man was medically assessed by ambulance paramedics. Officers attended between 7.54 pm and 8.44 pm.
Shortly afterwards firefighters attended a building in Seldon Road where a small fire had broken out in a transformer – again due to a lightning strike in the local area affecting electrics. The transformer was out on arrival and no further signs of fire were found. Officers attended between 7.58 pm and 8.30 pm.
