Worthing Mayor Charles James appeared topless yesterday at the 19th Rowland Gibson Charity Swim 2013 held in the Aquarena. It was all part of the fun at the popular annual event in aid of the Mayor’s charities.
Cllr James suitably undressed started proceedings by being pushed into the pool by members of Worthing Panthers Allstars Cheerleaders. The Mayor was then followed by over 150 people taking part in the swimarathon to raise money for the Mayor’s charities. The majority were children from Worthing schools who all put in a stupendous effort.
Organiser Trudi Starling said: “The charity swim owes its success to a small core group of regular volunteers, without whom I could never make it happen. I think it’s important that we learn how to give something back to our society and having fun at the same time is a huge bonus.”
Over £1,500 was raised on the night as the children swam length after length – some swam over 150 lengths or over five kilometres. Henry House Hot Pool and Therapy Centre held a complimentary event with over 50 children participating raising almost £700.
The event is named after former stalwart Rowland Gibson who raised over £70,000 with the swimarathon before his tragic death in 2010.
The Mayor is picture emerging triumphantly from the pool.
