West Sussex County Council is challenging teams to run, walk, dance or swim from London to Rio on a virtual route.
Launched last year, Reaching Rio is the annual challenge taking teams on a virtual route from London to Rio – where physical activity logged by teams is converted into miles. Get to Rio in time for the football World Cup final and win prizes.
This year’s challenge runs from Tuesday April 1st to Sunday July 13th – the day of the football World Cup final in Rio.
It’s open to West Sussex workplaces and teams (to be made up of five people) can register now to take part at the Reaching Rio website. The challenge is backed by the West Sussex Health and Wellbeing Board.
Chairman of the Board Christine Field said: “Last year more than 100 teams signed up to take part in the first Reaching Rio challenge.
“We’d really like more teams to sign up this year – it’s a fun challenge and is a great topic for conversation in the workplace.”
Although any adult can join Reaching Rio is aimed at people who don’t currently do a lot of exercise. From walking to football, dance to swimming, all exercise is converted into miles and takes teams on their virtual route. They just need to log all activity on the website or via the smart phone app.
There’s a prize for the first team to reach Rio, as well as the chance to win prizes on the journey.
The Reaching Rio website features a virtual map of the route to Rio, a leader board, the list of bonus sports, prizes available to be won and calorie burn statistics. New this year is a messaging system where, once the challenge goes live, teams can talk to other teams about the challenge and how they are finding it.
Participants will be asked to complete a survey before they start Reaching Rio so at the end of the challenge, changes to lifestyles can be measured.
Christine added: “Although Reaching Rio challenges teams to take up exercise, you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to take part. You might find a sport that you really enjoy doing and continue with, and there are prizes to be won along the way.
“So don’t delay, register now and get ready to start your interactive journey.”
