Whiplash (15) is showing at the Connaught Cinema & Studio, Worthing from Friday March 6th to Monday March 9th.
Based on his own 2013 short and featuring some of the same cast, writer-director Damien Chazelle’s second theatrical feature centres on the relationship between Andrew (Teller, Divergent), an aspiring jazz drummer, and Fletcher, his ultra-demanding teacher (J. K. Simmons, giving an Oscar-nominated performance).
Driven almost to nervous and physical breakdown by Fletcher’s bullying, Andrew sacrifices everything, including his budding relationship with fellow student Nicole (Benoist), for his chance of greatness, leading to a shattering climax.
Teller (who did his own drumming) and Simmons (at last relishing a lead role) are both magnificent, Chazelle’s directorial hand is assured, and the cinematography gives the film a decidedly noirish edge.
Its exhilarating musical sequences alone justifying its many awards – which include both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2014 – Whiplash is an emotionally powerful, highly individual drama.
Running time: 106 minutes.
Show times: Monday March 9th at 6.15 pm.
The Connaught Cinema and Studio are at 3 Union Place, Worthing.
