Worthing hosts career conference for young people

Worthing hosts a county-wide conference offering free training and resources to boost employment opportunities for young people later this month.

The Youth Voice Network conference has been organised by a group of over 30 young people from 14 different youth groups across the county, including West Sussex County Council’s Youth Cabinet.

The conference, which takes place at the Charmandean Centre on Tuesday October 29th from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, will help young people get the relevant skills they need to find employment and have a voice in their communities.

The conference features input from the British Youth Council and GoThinkBig.co.uk, an initiative from O2 and Bauer Media which provides young people with helpful ideas, advice and support to get a foot on the career ladder.

The Youth Voice Network, which is supported by West Sussex County Council’s Youth Support and Development Service, has been awarded a grant of £26,000 from the European Union’s Youth in Action programme managed in the UK by the British Council.

As well as the conference the Youth Voice Network also hopes to liaise with decision makers at a regional and national level on issues that are important to young people.

Peter Evans, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Children – Start of Life, said: “The job market can be tough, now more so than ever. So any help we can offer young people to get that first step on the career ladder is vital.”

17-year-old Nadine Smith, from Crawley, has been elected to chair the network, said: “Everyone works really well together – I’m really proud of the progress we made in the management of this project.

“ We’ve got a good structure in place and we know what we’re doing. Collectively we represent a lot of different people from a real mixture of backgrounds. We bring a lot of different views together. I’m really excited that I can work with this group. It’s a big responsibility and I’m really pleased and honoured that I got voted as Chair.”
