A Freedom of Information(FOI) request to Worthing Borough Council last year asked whether the town was ready to cope with an asteroid crash.
The request is featured in a ‘top 10’ of wacky requests published by the Local Government Association (LGA) this week.
Ms L-M Nelson asked: “What precautions, preparations, planning and costings have been undertaken in case the following events occur in the Borough of Worthing:
“An asteroid or asteroids crashing into Worthing; break up above Worthing in the atmosphere of a meteor or meteors; a meteorite or meteorites land or crash in Worthing; a man-made object or objects (such as a satellite, space telescope, human space vehicle etc.) landing or crashing in the Borough of Worthing; solar activity disrupting electromagnetic fields.”
Worthing Borough Council simply answered: “Worthing Borough Council have an emergency plan which is aimed at fire and bomb procedures and evacuations.”
Wigan Council had a stranger request than Worthing, perhaps inspired by the Game of Thrones series, asking what plans are in place to protect the town from a dragon attack.
